By James Hookway The death toll from a series of flash floods and landslides in the southern Philippines rose sharply higher to 1000, the country's national disaster agency said Tuesday as President Benigno Aquino III prepared to visit the crisis zone later in the day. Typhoon Washi swept into the northern coast of Mindanao island late on Friday night, catching many victims unaware despite government warnings about the approaching storm, which dumped a month's worth of rain on the area in half a day. The disaster agency said 957 people were killed in the resulting flash floods and landslides, up from the previous toll of 650. There are 49 people still missing. In some instances, people were washed out to sea on fast-flowing rivers, clinging on to pieces of debris. Some were rescued by passing boats once out in the ocean. Mindanao usually lies below the path of the 20 or so typhoons that blast through the Philippines each year, and the storm was unusually late in the year. Disaster agency chief Benito Ramos said this might have contributed to a sense of complacency among local residents, many of whom lived in flimsy shanty settlements along the banks of main rivers.
