How To Lay Or Install Ceramic Tile - The Top 5 Worst Mistakes

A few years ago I used to install ceramic tile for a living until I injured my leg in a car
accident. During my time in this field of work, I noticed common mistakes new tile setters would
make that turned out to be expensive mistakes for the company.

Laying ceramic tile is not rocket science, but it can be difficult and costly if you don't know
how to do it properly. Once you are aware of the common mistakes involved with ceramic tile
installation, it is easy to avoid those problem areas.

The first biggest mistake people make is laying out the floor incorrectly. This problem alone could
cost hundreds of dollars, if you think about the price of each tile and the thin-set. If your
layout is wrong, you can easily go off course once you start laying tiles and result in having
to pull up the tiles to fix the problem.

The second biggest mistake is cutting the tiles improperly. It's easy to break or chip tiles if
you do not know how to cut tiles correctly and know what is the right equipment to use.

The third worst mistake is not mixing the thin-set or mortar correctly. If you mix the thin-set
to thin it will result in wasting most of the mortar mix and make it harder to keep the tiles on
course. If the mortar is to thick it will make it more difficult to spread the mortar on the
floor and will result in using too much in one area on the floor.

The fourth expensive mistake is wasting grout and applying it incorrectly. If you mix the grout
to thin it will cause air bubbles in the grout and cause the grout joints to shrink. You will
then have to do the job over and buy more grout to cover the tile surface area.

Last but not least the fifth worst mistake is not preparing the surface of the floor before you
start installing the ceramic tile. For example, the foundation of buildings shift over time
which results in causing the concrete floor to crack. When the concrete starts cracking so
does the tile laid over it.

There's certain things you have to do to prepare the surface for installation to prevent any potential cracks or breakage of the tiles. You also need to make sure the surface to be tiled is relatively even, because any dips or low areas will show when the ceramic tiles are laid over them.
